Underwater Inspection in Lieu of Dry Docking (UWILD), also commonly referred to as an In-Water Survey, allows designated underwater areas of a vessel to be examined while the vessel remains afloat, subject to the applicable class requirements and survey scope.
Typical UWILD Scope
The inspection may include underwater hull plating, sea chests and gratings, propeller, rudder, stern gear, bow thruster areas, draft marks, cathodic protection anodes and other items requested by the attending surveyor.
Preparation Before the Survey
Good preparation is essential. Vessel particulars, drawings where available, location, draft, underwater visibility, current conditions and access arrangements should be reviewed before mobilization. The diving team should also confirm communication, CCTV/video recording, lighting and measurement equipment required for the agreed scope.
Documentation and Reporting
Underwater findings should be clearly documented with video or photographs and an organized final report. Where a classification surveyor attends the operation, the diving team coordinates the underwater examination according to the surveyor’s instructions and the approved scope.
